Assistant Professor Kin Hong Ip from the Faculty of Humanities and Arts has been awarded as one of the four recipients for the 2021 Academic Research Grant supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC). The heritage conservation research project, titled “Macau’s Traditional Chunambo Construction – Investigation into its Building Techniques, Composition and Conservation Strategies”, was selected from 29 applications through strict and rigorous evaluation process.
Assistant Professor Kin Hong Ip obtained her PhD specialized in the field of Heritage Conservation from the University of Technology, Sydney. The selected research project focuses on the investigation into the material composition and characteristics of traditional Chunambo in Macau in order to understand its weathering mechanisms as well as the causes of deterioration. The project aims to thoroughly analyze the historic Chunambo through scientific methods, and, to examine possible ways to develop restoration Chunambo with improved properties to accommodate the urban environment in Macau.
Institute for Social and Cultural Research of the Macau University of Science and Technology has been appointed to organize a panel of experts to review the Academic Research Grant Regulations anonymously and provide academic comments to the selection panel prior to the selection review.
The 2021 Selection Panel is comprised of Leong Wai Man, Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Qian Chengdan, Director of the Institute of Area Studies, Peking University; Liu Zhiwei, Director of Centre for Historical Anthropology, Sun Yat-Sen University; Hao Yufan, Executive Associate Dean of School of Humanities and Social Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen); and Lam Weng Na, Head of the Division of Research and Publications, Cultural Affairs Bureau.
The Academic Research Grant was set up by the Cultural Affairs Bureau in 1988 to encourage the development of original academic research on Macao’s culture and the exchanges between Macao, Mainland China and other countries. Over the past three decades, the Bureau has awarded grants to over 160 research projects, which resulted in the publication of quite a large number of academic monographs.
